Chronicles of Riddick Review

Firing Squad
The first time I saw or heard of Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was at E3. I thought "hey, look, Doom... no wait... Doom 3 engine... no..." and went over only to be surprised it's an Xbox title. It sounded interesting from the sales pitch the marketing man was throwing to the crowd, but come on, it's based on a movie - it'll suck. So, off I went.

Interesting how things work out. Turns out that Chronicles of Riddick, the movie, wasn't so great, but Escape from Butcher Bay, the game based off the movie, was hot stuff - at least on the Xbox. But come on, what do Xbox developers know about making a first person shooter for the PC? A great deal, apparently. I'll say it now: this is the game Doom 3 should have been. more

For a start he's unarmed. All guards have DNA-encoded rifles (a trick borrowed from 2000AD's Judge Dredd) so Riddick can't use them. If that wasn't enough, most prison areas are also manned by security cameras with auto turrets that will deliver instant justice should you lose your cool. Thinking run and gun? You won't even make it out of your cellblock. Then there are the other inmates. There are more politics and hidden agendas than a Cabinet meeting. And the game's all the better for it.

Total Gamer

What we're served with is a steaming slice of first-person action, with a generous serving of stealth, a side order of melée combat, all wrapped up inside a detailed plot complimented by a decent script and excellent voice acting. Character interaction is a big part of the gameplay. Every prisoner has something to say, and they'll say it like they mean it. Some will shout, others will whisper, while some will just be plain nuts. But each will have their own very individual personalities that adds to the enveloping atmosphere of the game. Many will offer you missions that will further your quest to escape. You don't have to act like a C-list celebrity and take every job that's offered. But certain key moments will shift both the narrative and the gameplay along at a bristling pace. more
